PROGRAM FACETS

From the beginning, The Links organization has addressed its community service concerns in the areas of education, cultural and civic commitment.  Its national program is designed to accomplish the organization’s goals through four program facets:

Services to Youth


The Achievers Program encompasses all four facets.

The Arts
The major goals are to:

  1. Improve and enrich our community through activities which increase awareness and love for the arts.
  2. Collaborate and partner with local entities (i.e. Boys and Girls Club, Sacramento Theatre Company, Crocker Art Museum, 40 Acres Art Gallery) to present respectable recognition of the fine arts.
  3. Expose low- income youths to in-depth experience of live theatre, including meeting actors/actresses.
  4. Ensure Link members some measure of enjoyment through direction of their time, effort and money in the arts.

The Arts Projects

  • Collaborated with Boy/Girls Club to sponsor Three Doctors and presented their book “The Pact” to Achievers.
  • Collaborated with Sacramento Theatre Company for 3 years to allow low-income student to experience live theatre.
  • Collaborated with Sacramento Theatre Company to sponsor Nationally acclaimed actress Ruby Dee in One Woman Show “My last Good Nerve”.
  • In collaboration with Crocker Art Museum, sponsored Meet the Artist, with Internationally known female artist Betye Saar.
  • gHosted a bus trip, including Link members and community participants, to The DeYoung Museum, San Francisco to view the King Tut exhibition.
  • Special Presentation: An Evening with Faith Ringgold in conjunction with 40-Acres Arts Gallery.

Services to Youth
The major goals are to:

  1. Implement programs that address the critical issues and needs of African-American youth and their families.
  2. Provide opportunities through which self-esteem and self-confidence can be nurtured.
  3. Introduce young people to a variety of career opportunities.

  • General Scholarship Program
  • Oak Park Little League Baseball Team Sponsorship
  • Partnership with Parkway Elementary School
  • Healthy Living and Nutrition Workshops

National Trends and Services
The major goals are to:

  1. Identify those areas where utilization of resources and skills can make a difference. 
  2. Implement programs that alleviate economic, political, and social problems.
  3. Enrich the personal lives of Links members as well as that of the community.
  4. Heighten awareness of the problems faced by minorities and the underprivileged.

National Trends and Services Projects

  • Annual Senior Citizen Christmas Luncheon
  • Featured Disney World's head chef, Johnnie Rivers
  • Living Healthy with Diabetes
  • Annual Walk-A-Thon – To promote health and wellness
  • Linking Children to Literacy - Collected and donated 200 books to an elementary school

International Trends and Services

The major goals are to:

  1. Increase awareness among Links of international affairs and issues. 
  2. Collaborate with other organizations in sponsoring international programs.
  3. Provide information on political, economic, and cultural matters in African and Caribbean countries.
  4. Provide school materials to children in Africa.
  5. Support international organizations on the local, national, and international levels.
  6. Support foreign guests and students and encourage participation in international discussions.

  • Shoebox Project – School supplies to Namibia, Africa
  • Expanded our Global Vision – Collected over 300 pairs of used eyeglasses for African countries
  • Support for Professionals Analyzing Pap Smears in Nikuru, Kenya, Africa
